Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language

Continuing Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language

Jerusalem, June 28 – July 2, 2015

Teaching Spoken Israeli Hebrew

The International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for this year’s session of its Continuing Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language.  The workshop will take place in Jerusalem from Sunday through Thursday, June 28 - July 2, 2015 / 11-15 Tammuz 5775, and will focus on Teaching Spoken Israel Hebrew.

The International Center's Hebrew language workshops are designed to address issues facing Hebrew teachers in universities outside of Israel and to provide theoretical and practical tools to deal with them through meetings with scholars, lecturers and Hebrew teachers from Israel and abroad. The meeting with a small group of colleagues, conducted in an informal setting, promotes fruitful discussion and interchange of ideas.

The workshop is conducted in cooperation with the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction, Rothberg International School for Overseas Students. Workshop participants will observe classes and meet with teachers of the Division for a joint discussion on various issues that touch upon Hebrew teaching.  In the varied sessions the workshop participants will also be able to present the fruits of their labor.

The focus of this year's workshop deliberations is spoken Hebrew. We will explore developments in the spoken language, changes in vocabulary and grammar and their reflection in the written language: in written literature, writing on the internet etc.  We will also survey slang and the various registers in spoken Hebrew.  Alongside theoretical aspects, the practical sessions will spotlight ways of teaching language proficiency in the classroom.

As in previous years, the program will include round-table discussions. Participants will be invited to contribute actively to the discussion and will be able to share their own experiences with their colleagues.  This year the round table discussions will be devoted to:

*         What degree of proficiency in spoken Hebrew should be expected from students outside of Israel.

*        The teacher as educator: what spoken Hebrew should we teach?

*       Generation gaps between the teacher and the students as seen through the prism of the language used in the classroom.

The workshop program will also include a visit to the Academy of the Hebrew Language, and lectures by staff of the Academy.

General information:

*  Participation is limited to a small number of university teachers of Hebrew language, chosen from among applicants from all over the world.

*  The costs of accommodation, board, and travel to and from Israel are the responsibility of participants or their sponsoring institutions.

* The fee for participation in the workshop is NIS 1,000.
